Introduction to the Theme 

• Letter to Families: Send the letter home to parents to inform them about the letter and the animals children will be learning about.  It features home activities, ideas, and video links to help parents and caregivers learn with their children.
• Introduction to the Theme: Offering ideas about how to prepare your classroom and introduce the letter Ee and the elephant featured in the pack.
• Pictures of Animals: To introduce the African elephant and the Asian elephant pictures, and discuss similarities and differences.

Literacy Activities

 

This section includes ideas for different aspects of literacy, such as oral language development, phonological awareness, print awareness, alphabet knowledge, and early writing skills. It also consists of the following hands-on activities:

• Letter Ee Songs: Use a letter E-related song during circle time and transitions.
• Letter Ee Poster: Post this poster on your Bulletin Board to introduce the letter Ee and the elephant.
• Tracing Letter Ee: Show the students how to position upper and lower case letter Ee within writing lines, to help your students understand the proportions and spaces of their letters.  Then, let your students trace lowercase and uppercase letters to complete the activities.
• Finding the Letter “Ee”: Students look for the letter “E” in its uppercase and lowercase versions.
• ABC Mazes: Students will mark the letters in the correct alphabetical order.
• Elephant Letter Recognition Game: Students will choose a peanut, say the name and sound of the letter, and introduce the peanut through the elephant’s mouth.
• Alphabet Puzzles: Students will match uppercase letter cards with their corresponding lowercase letter cards.
• Rhyming Activities: Students will choose and circle the picture whose name rhymes with the first one.
• Word Wall Cards (English and Spanish): Introduce students to these elephant-related words at the beginning of the week and brainstorm more. Create a word wall. Print extra sets for games and centers.
• Elephant Pointers: Use them to mark the words in the storybooks to show your students that you read from top to bottom and left to right, and that words have meaning.                                                                                                                                                

Math Activities 

This section provides ideas for teaching various math concepts, including number recognition, counting, shapes, patterns, and spatial relationships. It also consists of the following hands-on activities:

• Elephant Memory Game: Students will use the cards to play.
• Circle the Larger and Smaller Elephant: Students will recognize and circle the larger or smaller elephant in each row.
• Elephant Patterns: Students will use the provided tiles to copy, complete, and create different patterns.
• Which is Different? Students will identify which elephant is different in each row.
• Elephant Counting: Students will use a variety of activities, such as counting items and marking or writing the number.
• Elephant Number Puzzles: Students will complete the puzzles following a number sequence.
• Elephant Number Recognition Game: Students will choose a leaf, say what number it is, and introduce the leaf through the elephant’s mouth.
• Elephant Count and Match: Students trace each number one at a time and find the group of elephants that represents it. Then they trace a line from the number to the corresponding group of elephants to match it.                     

Science Activities

This section offers ideas to foster children’s natural curiosity about elephants through exploration, observation, and hands-on activities. These activities include learning to classify and compare objects, acquiring scientific facts about these mammals, and encouraging children to ask questions, make predictions, and explore the world around them. It also includes the following hands-on activities:

• Elephant Pictures: Use the pictures to teach about elephants.
• Elephant Facts: Use the facts provided to teach scientific information about elephants.
• Elephant Vocabulary Words: Students will learn specific vocabulary words related to elephants.
• Elephant Body Parts: Students will learn the main body parts of elephants and then match these parts with the corresponding written words or spaces that identify them.
• Mini Book About Elephants: Students will trace important dotted phrases related to elephants and use their mini book to review key facts.  

Fine Motor Activities 

This section includes hands-on activities that exercise the children’s small muscles in their hands and fingers, allowing them to perform tasks such as writing, drawing, manipulating objects, and developing hand-eye coordination, finger dexterity, and the ability to grasp and release objects. It includes the following hands-on activities:

• Elephant Tracing: Students will trace the lines, paths, and shapes.
• Elephant Coloring and Cutting: Students will color the elephants and cut the lines with scissors.
• E is for Elephant Coloring: Students will review the letter E’s name and sound and color each picture.
• E Dot-to-Dot: Students will use dot-to-dot markers in the letters.
• Elephant Lacing: Students will use a shoelace or string to lace the elephant. 

Art Activities

This section includes ideas to promote children’s cognitive, emotional, and social development, foster self-expression, and engage them in sensory art activities. It also consists of the following hands-on activities:

• Elephant Mask: Students use the mask to pretend to be the animal and review the facts learned about it.
• Elegant Elephant Craft: Students will follow the provided instructions to complete the craft.
